Cyber-Slacking
Bottom
Now
that many people have a computer on their desk at work it is very easy
to send an email to a friend, do online banking or check the weather
forecast or news. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear there is a
term for this – ‘cyber-slacking’. Here are some survey statistics from
the USA:
75% of companies monitor employee website use.
65% of companies use software to block certain websites.
60% of employees admitted wasting work time on internet.
87% of employees visited non-work-related websites.
20% of employees admitted to visiting sex websites at work.
Employees spend 20% of their time in personal activities in work time.
(from various articles in the NZ Herald in 2007.)
Should employers monitor their employees’ email & internet traffic?
Why might this be a legal and/or ethical thing to do? Why might this not be a legal and/or ethical thing to do?
